Rhinoplasty Q & A

What is rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure that alters the size or shape of your nose. Commonly called a “nose job,” rhinoplasty is among the most popular plastic surgery procedures in the nation. The team at ENT of New Orleans offers excellent results with a smooth recovery process.

Having your rhinoplasty done by a fellowship-trained facial plastic surgeon is important. The credentials held by the practitioners at ENT of New Orleans demonstrate a dedication to excellence and a passion for remaining at the top of their field.

A rhinoplasty can correct:

  • Nasal asymmetry
  • Large, upturned, or wide nostrils
  • Nose profile with a visible hump
  • Nose size out of proportion with the rest of your face
  • Abnormally wide bridge
  • Bulbous, enlarged, or drooping nasal tip

Rhinoplasty is a great way to get facial symmetry and balance, which are key components of beauty. The procedure can also reconstruct a broken nose or correct a deviated septum, which often causes chronic nasal congestion.

What happens during rhinoplasty?

You’ll receive medication to ensure you rest comfortably from start to finish. Your specialist begins by creating a small incision at the base of your nose. The skin is gently lifted to gain access to the underlying bone and cartilage.

The next step is removing or augmenting your nasal tissues to create the best possible size and shape for your facial structure. If additional tissue is needed, cartilage can be transferred from the deeper area of your nose or from somewhere on your body.

Once your doctor is pleased with the results, the incision is closed and bandaging is placed to support the area. Rhinoplasty is usually done as an outpatient procedure, so you should be able to return home the same day.

What is recovery like after rhinoplasty?

You’ll receive full recovery instructions prior to your procedure. Sticking to these guidelines is an important part of a successful recovery.

You’ll need to rest with your head slightly elevated in the days following your rhinoplasty. A degree of bleeding, drainage, bruising, and swelling is normal, and will quickly go away. You’ll be restricted from strenuous physical activity as your body heals, and you’ll also need to avoid making extreme facial expressions.

As the weeks pass you’ll begin to see the effects of your rhinoplasty. It can take as long as a full year for the final effects to develop, but you can expect those results to last for the rest of your life.
